RePiece: Rethinking Heritage with Circuits

Project Brief:
What if we could use everyday ceramic objects as computational interfaces? Given new methods of integrating circuits into glazed ceramics, push the design space of Ceramic Circuits.

An 11 week design project (Groups of three)

What happens when we mix the historical craft language of porcelain with modern design forms?
Take a ceremonial Chinese tea set.

Used usually once during rituals of celebration (e.g, Marriage), they serve afterwards as static decorations in a family's home.

We proposed RePiece, a conceptual design service that turns antique ceramics into quirky home devices through grafted circuits and IoT nodes.
Outcome 1:

A suite of design language interactions mixing tech affordances with traditional Chinese ceramic Art.

Outcome 2: Conceptual devices and UIs as realized through RePiece
Outcome 3: Design journal documenting explorations in crafting methods, culminating in a fully functional MP3 player as a proof of concept.
